Assessment & X-rays
Full-Mouth Oral Assessment
A full-mouth oral assessment is the foundation of good dental care — a calm, structured look across your teeth, gums and oral soft tissues to understand your current oral health and identify concerns early.
Understanding your oral health
Oral health involves much more than checking for toothaches. Changes in gum tissues, gradual enamel wear, micro-cracks in old restorations, or early bacterial decay often develop silently without immediate pain.
At Mantsho Dental, a full-mouth oral assessment allows our dental therapist to take a calm, structured look across every area of your mouth. Rather than jumping straight into procedures, we take time to listen to any symptoms you have noticed, review your general medical background, and discuss your personal expectations.
What an assessment may consider
- Tooth condition & enamel. Each tooth surface for signs of demineralisation, active decay, fractures, or wear from clenching or dietary acids.
- Gum & periodontal tissues. Gum tone, inflammation, bleeding tendencies, plaque accumulations, and tartar along the gumline.
- Existing restorations. The edges and integrity of previous fillings or dental work to ensure margins remain sealed against leakage.
- Soft tissues & bite. The tongue, cheeks, palate, and how your teeth meet (occlusion) to check overall mucosal health and comfort.
How findings inform a discussion
Findings from your assessment are not a rigid prescription — they form the basis of an open clinical discussion. We explain what we observe in everyday language, outline whether any areas need restorative care (such as fillings) or preventive support (such as scaling or fluoride), and present alternatives clearly.
If deeper structures need radiological examination before deciding on treatment, we may discuss the role of dental X-rays.
Preparing your questions
We encourage every patient to attend their assessment with questions. A few notes or specific concerns help ensure everything important to you is covered during your visit.
- Note down when any pain, cold sensitivity, or bleeding began.
- Bring a summary of your current medications and medical conditions.
- Ask about home care adjustments, interdental tools, or dietary factors.
Oral assessment questions
What is an oral assessment?
A clinical evaluation of your teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks, and jaw relationships. It identifies your dental health status, detects decay or inflammation early, and provides personalised guidance for care.
What history should I mention?
Please mention any current medications, chronic health conditions (such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, or bleeding tendencies), previous dental treatments, allergies, or recent changes in bite comfort.
Are X-rays always needed?
X-rays are not mandatory for every visit. They are recommended when clinical inspection indicates a need to examine hidden spaces between teeth, root structures, or underlying jawbone.
What are possible next steps?
Depending on what the assessment reveals, next steps may range from routine scaling and polishing, oral hygiene guidance, or fluoride, to fillings for decayed teeth or planning extractions for unsalvageable teeth.
How can I prepare?
Brush your teeth normally before attending, prepare a list of questions or specific concerns, and arrive a few minutes early for an unhurried, comfortable consultation.
